Bremerton Community Center Funding Included in Final Spending Bill

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the funding she secured to boost construction work and community development in Kitsap County has been included in the final version of the Fiscal Year 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act. The funding will create jobs building new facilities for local community efforts.  The final version of the spending bill came out of a conference committee between the Senate and the House and is expected to pass both bodies shortly before being sent to the President for his signature.

The final bill also includes funding for pedestrian safety improvements at Suquamish Way and Division Streets in Suquamish.

United Way of Kitsap County Community Center Improvement Project, Bremerton: $1,217,500

This funding will be used to develop a facility for the new United Way Non-Profit Community Center in Bremerton, WA.

The United Way Non-Profit Community Center will house several local non-profit agencies and organizations that provide a range of services to low-income members of the community.

“Our aim is to have the greatest positive impact on the lives of those who need our help the most.  This project is not just about a building, it is about bringing the community together and focusing our collective resources on creating measurable and lasting change,” said David Foote, Executive Director of the United Way of Kitsap County.

Pedestrian Safety Improvements at Suquamish Way and Division Streets, Suquamish: $600,000

This funding would provide for the design and construction of intersection pedestrian safety improvements at Suquamish Way and Division Street in Suquamish, WA.

In addition to creating up to 50 new construction jobs, this project would significantly increase the safety for the Suquamish community by providing improved pedestrian access for children crossing the street from the local elementary school to the Suquamish Tribal Center and for the public who walk to access the downtown businesses and waterfront.  The project will also decrease the speed of vehicles and number of accidents with the installation of a new traffic light.
