ICYMI: Senate passed Murray’s bipartisan supplemental package with Ukraine aid in a vote of 70-29
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
“Two brutal years after Vladimir Putin started his cruel, bloody campaign to trample a sovereign democracy, the people of Ukraine continue to inspire the world with their resolve, resiliency, and bravery. The contrast between the depravity Putin has shown as he commits one atrocity after another and the spirit of the Ukrainian people as they endure and repel the onslaught has only grown more stark. Today, Ukraine continues to stand tall, and fight courageously.
“However, our allies need more than courage to defend their homeland—they need ammunition, air defense systems, and our continued support for their battle to protect their country. In this moment—when the world is watching and a key ally is facing an existential threat—the United States must not waver in supporting Ukraine, standing for democracy, and opposing ruthless despots who seek to impose brutal dictatorship over free peoples.
“Unfortunately, despite the Speaker’s statements about supporting Ukraine, he has yet to hold a single vote that would send funding to our Ukrainian allies. It is time for that to change. The House must swiftly vote on the Senate’s bipartisan aid package to get desperately needed resources to our allies on the frontlines in Ukraine. There is no reason—and no time—for delay. Even opponents of this bill in the House have admitted it has the support to pass—the Speaker need only put it to a vote and let Congress take action to defend our allies and protect democracy.”
