(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that $11,916,784 has been made available for the Washington state Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
These funds will be distributed to community service organizations to help provide assistance to individuals and families in Washington state who have been most affected by this recession. Grantees receiving funds under the CSBG program are required to provide services and activities addressing employment, education, better use of available income, housing, nutrition, emergency services and/or health.
“Community service providers have had their hands tied by this recession, and right now is when so many Washington state families need their services most,” said Senator Patty Murray. “This recovery money helps boost our state’s economy , while ensuring that families can meet their most basic needs.”
As a senior member of the Senate committees that fund and oversee the CSBG program, Murray worked to ensure that investments in Washington state’s community service programs were included in the Recovery Act. Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
