(Washington D.C.) –Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate HELP Employment and Workplace Safety Subcommittee, released the following statement on the HELP committee hearing on the nominations of Jackie Berrien for Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EEOC) Chair, Chai Feldblum and Victoria Lipnic for EEOC Commissioners, and P. David Lopez for EEOC general counsel.
“Our country has made great strides toward eliminating discrimination, but we need to ensure that the EEOC remains strong and has the resources to enforce laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace.
“Unfortunately, the EEOC faces significant challenges and has a backlog of over 85,000 cases. These cases represent real people, with real concerns and they deserve a timely response.
“That is why I urge my colleague to quickly consider and confirm the nominees we have before us today. Now more than ever, we need strong leadership at the EEOC.
“The nominees are all extremely well-qualified. All have a lifetime of commitment and service. Each possesses extraordinary skills and experience that will help them advance the EEOC’s mission and ensure proper enforcement of our nation’s laws and robust protections for our nation’s workers.”
