(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) condemned Republicans for failing to join Democrats to pass an economic stimulus bill that would help strengthen the economy. A vote on the stimulus bill failed Wednesday afternoon by just one vote.
“Tonight Republicans told seniors, veterans, and millions of American families who are struggling to make ends meet, ‘No,’” said Senator Murray. “Instead of joining us to pass a bipartisan, targeted stimulus that would immediately help Americans in our faltering economy – Republicans just opted for delay.”
The Senate Finance Committee plan would help millions of American families as well as 20 million additional seniors and 250,000 disabled veterans, who would otherwise be left behind. It also would provide assistance to help low-income Americans heat their homes, help small businesses invest in the economy and create jobs, and extend unemployment insurance benefits to help Americans whose jobs have been casualties of the slowing economy.
“We only need one more Republican to put good policy ahead of politics,” Murray said. “I hope they will come to their senses and start putting the American people first.”
