(Washington D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray issued the following statement on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War.
"With the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War upon us, it’s important to reflect upon the past as we also look to the future. First and foremost, I couldn’t be more proud of our fighting men and women – or more thankful to their families. They have done an outstanding job and truly are our best and brightest.
“But unfortunately, I worry that the President’s Iraq war policy has let those same warriors down. Over the last five years, we have lost nearly 4,000 Americans and spent over $525 billion. Yet there is no end in sight.
“The Iraqi government has failed to take advantage of their great work by making the tough political progress needed. “
Here at home, our returning troops have – too often – had to struggle to get the care they earned. Our veterans are heroes who risked their lives for our country. We must honor their sacrifice by considering veterans’ care a cost of this war.
“And time after time, our efforts to bring a new course to the war policy have been blocked, despite a majority of Congress and a majority of Americans calling for a change.
“I want a new course for Iraq, and I believe the majority of the American people do too. On this anniversary, I hope that political leaders in Washington, D.C., and Baghdad hear that call, finally change course, and truly honor the service and sacrifice of so many.”
