Murray Blasts Latest Email Suggesting VA Puts Bottom-Line Before Vets’ Mental Health

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash), a key member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, today blasted the latest in a series of emails that call into question the agency’s attention to quality mental health care for our nation’s veterans.

The email was released by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) and VoteVets.

Murray’s statement follows:

"The first priority of the VA should be ensuring that our veterans get the best possible treatment for their injuries. The mental wounds of war are just as serious as physical injuries and it’s time they be treated that way.

"I’m tired of scolding the VA.  It’s time for this agency to get it together and remember who they are here to serve – our nation’s veterans.

"I hope this email isn’t further evidence that the Administration cares more about the bottom-line than the lifeline they should be providing our veterans.

"VA staff across the country are working their hearts out to get our veterans the care they need and deserve, but emails like these make their jobs far more difficult.

"Our veterans didn’t question our nation when we asked them to serve.  Why on earth would the VA question their motives when they are brave enough to reach out for the mental health care they need and deserve?  It’s nothing less than shameful. "
