(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) today received a note from President George W. Bush thanking her for the gift of Washington state asparagus she sent last month and concluding that it is, in fact, "some of the best in the world."
In late June – following news reports that the President had praised German asparagus after a state dinner with Chancellor Angela Merkel – Murray, along with Representative Doc Hastings, sent 10 pounds of fresh Washington state asparagus to the White House for the President and his family to enjoy.
It appears that the President found the spears – purchased from Gourmet Trading in Pasco – to his liking.
In his thank you note to Murray the President wrote:
"Thank you for the asparagus from the hard-working farmers of Washington State. I know it is some of the best in the world, and I appreciate your thinking of me."
Murray, whose father grew up picking asparagus in the Tri-Cities, was not surprised by the President’s reaction.
"I knew all the President had to do was taste Washington state asparagus to know what truly great asparagus is," Senator Murray said. "I’m pleased that he has come to the conclusion that all Washington state residents know is true – our asparagus really is the best in the world."
