“The president has spent 60 days peddling his privatization plan, and the verdict from the American people is clear: they reject his risky scheme. Unfortunately, his remarks tonight offered no new hope to those of us who want to see Social Security strengthened, not dismantled. His ideas would ensure deep benefit cuts for middle class seniors, trillions in new debt for the next generation, and an end to a guaranteed benefit in favor of a stock market gamble.
I look forward to finally seeing a detailed plan from the President in the near future, but he must know by now that the American people will not support Social Security privatization. While we wait to hear any idea that promotes real long-term solvency from the President, I will continue work to support and strengthen this important social insurance program – not to privatize and imperil it.”
