(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) today appointed Senator Patty Murray to a bipartisan Senate working group that will examine how best to implement the Commission’s recommendations dealing with reform of the Senate’s oversight of intelligence and homeland security.
Senator Murray has focused much attention on Homeland Security issues in the wake of 9/11, becoming a leading national advocate for increasing security at our ports. Murray serves on the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.
“In the wake of the 9/11 Commission findings it is now up to Congress to work together to address our intelligence and security needs. We must be able to move swiftly and decisively to protect our nation, and I look forward to working in the same spirit of unity showed by the Commission to improve oversight and response to terrorist threats,” Murray said.
The working group will begin its work immediately and present its findings and recommendations to Senate leadership as expeditiously as possible.
Specifically, this working group will be charged with evaluating and making recommendations on three issues outlined in section 13.4 of the 9/11 Report:
- Congressional oversight of intelligence
- Congressional oversight of Homeland Security
- Accelerating the appointments process for national security policymakers.
The members of the working group include Senators McConnell, Reid, Collins, Lieberman, Warner, Levin, Lott, Dodd, Roberts, Rockefeller, Stevens, Byrd, Cochran, Durbin, Gregg, Schumer, McCain, Clinton, Lugar, Biden, Kyl and Murray.
