(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the U.S. Senate approved the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety and Innovation Act by a vote of 96-1. This legislation will provide the FDA with the necessary tools to support innovation and provide access to live-saving medicines. The bill includes Senator Murray’s Better Pharmaceuticals and Devices for Children Act, which will make sure children are prioritized in the drug development process.
“When so many Americans depend on innovation to produce potentially life-saving medicines, I am grateful my colleagues worked quickly to ensure drug and medical device approvals did not come to a standstill.
“I would like to commend Chairman Harkin, as well as Ranking Member Enzi, for working to include my legislation to help drug labels provide clear, detailed information about the proper use and dosage of medications for children.
“America’s children should never be an afterthought when it comes to the safety and effectiveness of our nation’s drugs and medical devices and I’m proud we’ve taken the appropriate steps today to uphold that idea.”
