WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked the Senate from moving forward with consideration of legislation to address the current student loan interest rate crisis:
“Today’s vote is just another example of how out of touch Republicans in Congress are with the struggles of everyday American families. In fact, after votes like this, it makes me wonder just who Republicans are listening to when they’re not in D.C. Because what I heard from students last week when I traveled back home was a constant anxiety over the weight of these loans that keeps them from helping to grow our economy, start a family, or to take risks with their careers. We can’t continue to do this to generation after generation of college students and expect to be able to compete in the 21st century economy. We must do everything to remove barriers to education, not erect new ones. For millions of Americans, affordable college has been the ticket to the middle class and I’m deeply disappointed my Republican colleagues are allowing it to slip away with each passing moment they continue to block our efforts to address this problem.”
