(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has awarded AmeriCorps grants totaling more than $15 million to Washington state organizations. AmeriCorps grants support organizations that sponsor national service programs to tackle community needs in the areas of education, veterans and military families, economic opportunity, health, environmental stewardship, and disaster services. The funding will help hundreds of community projects run by AmeriCorps volunteers in Washington state. One grant, to the Washington Conservation Corps (WCC), will help members respond to disasters in Washington state. WCC currently has members on the ground responding to the mudslide in Oso.
“AmeriCorps represents the best our country has to offer – service to our communities and to our fellow citizens,” Senator Murray said. “I am pleased this funding will go towards continuing the great work AmeriCorps members are doing in my home state.”
