TRANSPORTATION: Murray, Cantwell Announce $5M Grant for UW PacTrans Center

(Washington, D.C.)—  Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) applauded an announcement by the Department of Transportation that the University of Washington will receive over $5 million in funding for the Pacific Northwest Transportation Center, or PacTrans, dedicated to research on safe and sustainable solutions for the diverse transportation needs of the Pacific Northwest.  PacTrans will apply advanced technology solutions to help improve the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.  The Center will focus on enhancing the safety of transportation infrastructure and system operations in the Pacific Northwest.

In January, Sens. Murray and Cantwell sent a letter in support of the grant to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation.

“This is great news for the University of Washington,” said Senator Murray.  “This funding will provide critical support for the University’s  transportation research and education programs, and will support important advances in transportation safety for Washington state and the nation.”

“The University of Washington is one of the premier research institutions in this country, and its re-designation as a University Transportation Center underscores just how important their work is,” said Senator Cantwell.  “PacTrans, the UW-led proposal, will help lead us to a more sustainable transportation future – guided by safety, sustainability, and technology.  Considering the transportation challenges facing America, our country needs the innovative research being done by UW and its partner institutions to build a better legacy for our children.”
