VETERANS: Murray Statement on VA Deal Passage

Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, released the following statement after the Senate’s vote to pass legislation to address short and long-term issues at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Our veterans have waited far too long for this day. With this vote, Congress has demonstrated it can take meaningful, bipartisan steps to address a critical issue facing our nation’s heroes.

“However, as we have seen with the full VHA Access Audit, reports of additional concerns within the system will only increase as we continue to hold the VA accountable. Today is an important step, but far from the final step as we build on this bipartisan momentum to address the many remaining challenges including: veterans suicide, homelessness, sexual assaults, and eliminating the claims backlog.

“I commend Chairmen Sanders and Miller for their work to make this possible and I am pleased the Department of Veterans Affairs now has a new Secretary charged with efficiently implementing these much-needed reforms.”
