A childcare center at the VA Puget Sound’s American Lake campus could get a lifeline for a couple more years if Congress adopts a measure by Sen. Patty Murray to extend the program.
The center is slated to close at the end of this month. It opened in September 2011 after Congress passed a measure Murray wrote to expand VA services for women. The childcare center was considered a pilot program with special funding.
Her new measure attached to a broader VA bill cleared the House of Representatives this week and is on its way to the Senate. The provision would keep the doors open at the childcare center through Dec. 31, 2015.
“For those who have so bravely served and are coping with wounds of war, accessing affordable and reliable child care should not be an additional challenge,” Murray said in a news release.
