(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, guaranteeing nationwide marriage equality.
“Today is a truly historic moment, and a victory for equality and for love. After decades of fighting for equal rights, LGBT couples finally have the guarantee of marriage equality nationwide and the protections that all married couples enjoy. I am so proud of how far our country has come, and it is because of the dedication of the LGBT and allied communities that we have seen the tide turn.
“While this ruling was a long-overdue step forward, we cannot forget how much more work must be done to build on this momentum and deliver on our nation’s promise of equality to all LGBT Americans. In far too many places in our country, LGBT individuals can still be fired from their jobs, endure bullying and harassment in school, and be denied service in shops and restaurants simply because of who they are or who they love. I am going to continue to work with all of my colleagues to fight this discrimination and advance equal treatment for all.”
