Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, Washington state airports will receive more than $217 million, including $175.7 million for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and $16.8 million for Spokane International Airport

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced $ 217,133,500 in American Rescue Plan awards for Washington state airports, including $175.7 million for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and $16.8 million for Spokane International Airport. The awards are distributed by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of $8 billion in total grants to keep U.S. airport workers employed and construction projects going, and help U.S. airports recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As we continue to get shots in arms and Washington state families are flying again in greater and greater numbers, it’s critical that our airports can keep people and goods going where they need to go,” Senator Murray said. “Washington state’s airports are absolutely vital to our regional economies and after a devastating year for the airline industry, the American Rescue Plan will help keep workers on payroll, passengers on planes, and shipments in the skies. This relief funding is a lifeline, but as we look to build back better from this pandemic, I’m going to keep pushing for a historic investment in infrastructure to upgrade our airports, roads, bridges, and more – it’s time we invest in Washington state in a big way.”
The funding provides economic relief to eligible commercial service, reliever, and general aviation airports. The money will help keep people safe and employed by reimbursing operational expenses, debt service payments, and costs related to combating the spread of pathogens at the airport. Airports can also use the money to provide rent relief to in-terminal retail and concession companies. The funding requires that airports continue to employ at least 90 percent of their pre-pandemic employees for those airports that cover a majority of the traveling public.
Senator Murray has been a consistent champion of securing funding for Washington state transportation infrastructure, especially during the pandemic. In particular, she fought to include $30 billion for transit agencies who have been deeply impacted by the pandemic and forced to cut service and jobs in the American Rescue Plan, as well as $35 billion in aid for our nation’s transit systems and airports as part of the CARES Act.
