(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today announced the release of $876,942 in federal grants to the Seattle King County Public Health Department through the Ryan White Title IV Program. The funding will provide medical treatment and support services for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS who lack health insurance and financial resources.
The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act programs provide financial assistance to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. These programs help cover some of the expenses of prescription drugs, housing, intervention, education and dental services.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray is a strong supporter of the Ryan White Care Act, which she worked to reauthorize in 2000. In 2002, Murray secured $5.9 million for Ryan White Care Act funding for King County and voted to increase federal funding for the Act by $103 million. Murray is also an advocate to increase federal funding to cover the costs of expensive AIDS drugs.
“Until there is a cure, these funds are critical to helping King County residents living with HIV/AIDS,” Senator Murray said. “The Ryan White Care ACT plays a critical role in providing primary health care and support services to those who need it the most. Thanks to this grant we can help improve the quality and availability of care for people living with HIV/AIDS and their families.”
The federal funds will be administered by the King County Public Health Department. The expected release date is August, 1 2003.
