(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today announced that $2,500,000 in federal transportation funding will be released to help construct the new Federal Way Transit Center. The funding, which Murray secured, will be provided to the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority on Monday, August 18th.
As the highest-ranking Democrat on the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Murray secured the funding in the Fiscal Year 2003 Transportation spending bill.
“Every day, thousands of residents in the Federal Way area rely on transit to get to work, to doctor’s appointments and to family gatherings,” Murray said. “I worked to secure this federal funding because I know it will improve transportation throughout the area. The new transit center will provide much-needed parking and will offer convenient connections to local and regional buses. Improving our transportation network helps our economy, our productivity, and our quality of life.”
The Federal Way Transit Center will be located at 23rd Avenue South and South 317th and will be linked to the I-5 center HOV lanes. The Center’s parking garage will provide 1,200 much-needed parking spots. Currently, the Federal Way Park and Ride, which has 900 parking spots, is over capacity.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2004, and the center is expected to be completed in 2005.
