Murray Helps Secure $75 Million for Sound Transit

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee has fully funded President Bush’s $75 million request for Sound Transit. The Subcommittee, of which Sen. Patty Murray is the highest-ranking Democrat, marked up the FY2004 Transportation spending bill this afternoon.

“I applaud President Bush for requesting $75 million for Sound Transit and I thank my Republican colleague, Richard Shelby of Alabama, for working with me to secure this important funding.

The transportation crisis in the Puget Sound is real and getting worse. But by working with Republicans and Democrats to put Washington State first, I am proud to have helped secure this funding.

Not only will this federal funding help get thousands of cars off our crowded highways, but it will help create thousands of good-paying jobs right here in the Puget Sound. These dollars will also help lessen the burden on local taxpayers

Link light rail is not a silver bullet that will magically clear every car from our roads. But it is an essential part of the solution that includes better roads, highways, ferries, airports and other modes of transportation.

Only by investing in a range of transportation solutions will we continue to have the economy and the quality of life that is so important to families in Washington state.”
