(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray today announced nearly $800,000 in federal grants to help reduce drug use in Washington state. Awarded under the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s Drug-Free Communities program, these funds will allow local community coalitions to provide treatment, mentoring, and family advocacy services to help keep young people off drugs.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray worked to include these funds in the fiscal year 2003 Omnibus Appropriations bill.
“As a parent and former teacher, I know how important it is to protect our children from drugs and to act together to educate them on the dangers of drug use. That’s why I’m proud to have helped bring these federal grants to our local communities to help promote healthy lifestyles for our children,” said Senator Murray.
The following Washington State programs will receive Drug-Free Community grants:
- Chelan-Douglas Counties, TOGETHER! For Drug Free Youth, $91,048
- Sequim School District, Parents and Resources of the East County Task Force (P.R.O.T.E.C.T.), $99,600
- Granite Falls School District, Granite Falls Community Coalition, $100,000
- Greater Maple Valley Community Center, Maple Valley Communities That Care, $89,648
- Kent Youth and Family Services, Drug Elimination Coalition, $99,981
- Selah School District, Selah Community Action Network (CAN!), $100,000
- Snohomish County, Snohomish County Health and Safety Network, $99,892
- Wahkiakum Community Network, $99,160
These grants are part of 183 new grants totaling $17.5 million awarded today to community anti-drug coalitions across the country.
