Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member and former Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee issued the following statement on the passage of Ohio Issue 1, amending the State of Ohio’s Constitution to give individuals the right to make and carry out their own reproductive decisions, including on abortion:
“Tonight’s election is a resounding victory for Ohio women and for everyone who doesn’t want the government interfering in women’s private health care decisions. Once again, voters proved that ever since the Dobbs decision rolled back the clock on women’s rights and unleashed a full-blown health care crisis, everywhere abortion rights are on the ballot, abortion rights win.
“Republicans in Ohio went to extraordinary lengths to try to stop voters from making their voices heard on this issue—from trying to make it harder to pass ballot measures, to launching a multi-million-dollar disinformation campaign, to drafting incendiary and false language to mislead voters on what Issue 1 was about. Even in the face of these desperate and dishonest efforts, women still turned out to make their voices heard, and abortion rights still won.
“Republicans can see clear as day that they are on the wrong side of this issue and the wrong side of the American people, who have made clear time and again they do not want politicians interfering in their pregnancies. Democrats will continue to hold Republicans accountable for their anti-abortion extremism and cruelty, and Senate Democrats will continue to make clear that we are ready to restore abortion rights for every woman in America with a pro-choice majority in Congress.”
