Support of Community Leaders
“I’ve had the pleasure and the honor
of knowing her for a number of years, and she truly is a
leader. She is a doer. You know there is a saying that goes,
‘there are those that make it happen, there are those that
watch it happen, and then there are those who wonder what happened.’
Well, our senior U.S. Senator is one of those who makes things
happen. But most of all, I really respect and honor her because
she is a person who is always working for the working families.
She is a person who respects every individual no matter what their
creed, race, ethnicity, or belief is. She is a person who respects
the farm workers. She is a person who respects all of our working
groups in our communities. And she certainly respects the rights
and dignity of every citizen in the state of Washington, which
then reflects to every citizen in the United States.” Full

“For the past three years, we’ve given
Senator Murray our highest honor, the Distinguished
Community Health Defender Award. She’s been a champion for
meeting the healthcare needs of all underserved groups including
the Latino community. Over the past three years, Senator Murray
has increased funding for community healthcare nationwide by over
$200 million. In 2002 alone more than $2.8 million came to Washington
state. That’s enabled us to expand our migrant health centers
and serve over 50,000 more people last year. Today, more than 137
community health centers and clinics are providing care throughout
Washington State. Thank you, Senator Murray!”

Washington Association of Community and Migrant
Health Centers

"Senator Murray has been instrumental in supporting
and funding 21st Century After
School Programs that serve a majority of Latino children and parents
in the Yakima Valley. Through her leadership on the Senate Appropriations
and Education Committees, Senator Murray has fought vigorously to
secure funding for these critical programs to help Latino children
achieve academic excellence. Each year the 21st Century After School
Programs serves over 2,500 children and 1,400 parents of which 85%
are Latino in the Lower Yakima Valley."

" Senator Murray has been a tireless advocate
for migrant children since her election in 1992.
The Senator has been a champion for youth and all migrant programs.
In 1992, Higher Education migrant programs and youth were minimal.
In 1999, Washington had two High School Equivalency
Programs (HEP) and no College Assistance Migrant Programs (CAMP).
For Senator Murray, the glaring, unmet need for HEP and CAMP in
Washington was unacceptable. Senator Murray kept the pressure on
the Senate Appropriations Committee to increase funding for HEP
and CAMP. Today, we have 8 programs in Washington, 4 HEP and 4 CAMP.

college and community see the link below: http://www.cbc2.org/sserv/CAMP/

“I applaud Senator Patty Murray’s leadership
in helping to address the need for providing
additional safe, sanitary and affordable housing for Agricultural
Workers and their families living in Washington State. She has been
a leader in efforts such as working directly with the growers to
provide on-farm site improvements supporting agricultural employee
housing and, in promoting a dialogue among stakeholders to explore
and secure new resources for Agricultural Worker housing development
in the State.”
