Iraq

On October 11, 2002, I voted against the resolution authorizing

the President to take unilateral military action against Iraq, because it diminished Congress’ role in the decision-making process, and because so many key questions about its consequences remained unanswered.

While I voted against the resolution, my support for our servicemembers in Iraq has been unwavering. I have worked hard to ensure that our servicemembers in the field receive vital training and equipment, and that military families are cared for when their loved ones answer the call to serve.

I also know that the responsibility to our wounded warriors doesn’t end on the battlefield, and have championed efforts to help these brave men and women get the care they need. I have used my position in the Senate leadership and my seat on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, to help ensure servicemembers and their families get the support and services they deserve.  I have also worked with my colleagues in the Senate to conduct vigorous oversight of the war effort.

I have also worked more recently with President Obama to ensure that we conclude military action in Iraq in a way that promotes stability and the safe redeployment of our troops. I will continue to fight to honor the service and sacrifice of American soldiers by working to advance America’s best interests at home and abroad.
